KEYNOTE: IT’S NOW OR NEVER - UNDERSTANDING CONSUMERISM AND HOW IT’S CHANGING THE WAY EMPLOYEES MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT THEIR HEALTHCARE

Ann Mond Johnson, CEO, ZEST HEALTH

Walk into almost any Walgreens these days, and two things are sure to happen: you’ll find most of what you need on your household shopping list AND you can get treated for a chronic condition. It may seem like a strange mash-up of services, but the latter is just the latest expression of consumerism in healthcare – the notion that you give people the health services they want, when and how they want them.

Historically, consumers have relied on their physicians and benefit managers to help them through the healthcare labyrinth. But now, they must bear greater costs for their care and take on more responsibility for their decisions, at a time when they are feeling more financial pressure and perhaps not well equipped to do either.

Enter healthcare consumerism. In this session, Ann will guide participants through the consumerism landscape, highlighting how consumers determine the value of their healthcare, why technology accelerates the consumer era, key trends impacting employees and their decisions as they become (even against their will) engaged healthcare consumers and what the landscape might look like for consumers in the next several years.
